#1 Quality Boss

Adventurers returning East helped create a mystique of the West when they returned home wearing a "Boss of the plains," Stetson Cowboy hat.

#1 Quality was the highest grade available in Stetson hats at the time. Probably a blend of beaver, muskrat and coypu. This trademark was used from the 19th century up until the mid-twentieth century.

  3. Actually it is incorrect that the No 1 Quality was the "highest grade available." In fact the No 1 Quality was a middle of the road quality. The Extra Quality and Real Nutria were priced higher. So was the 3X, 4X, 5X and 7X. The only cheaper hat than No 1 Quality Stetson had were Select Quality and Extra Quality. So it went like this...
    Select Quality
    Excellent Quality
    No. 1 Quality
    Extra Quality
    Nutria Quality
    Real Nutria Quality
    3x Beaver Quality
    4x Beaver Quality
    5x Beaver Quality
    7x Beaver Quality
